This is the first lecture from the Modern Scholar course Literature of C.S. Lewis taught by Professor Timothy B. Shutt.
In this lecture professor Timothy Shutt provides an overview of the life and literature of C.S. Lewis. He mentions various viewpoints that people have had about Lewis and says why he thinks Lewis is more popular now than he was in his time. Shutt breaks Lewis' works into three categories: his Christian apologetic works, his fictional works including The Chronicles of Narnia, and his scholarly works. He discusses each category of Lewis' works and examines how Lewis has gained a following particularly in the areas of apologetics and fiction. Focusing primarily on his popular fictional work such as the Narnia series, Shutt describes an author that divided many, but who nonetheless remains highly readable and intellectually compelling. Shutt also considers Lewis' highly influential Christian apologetic work, his status as preeminent medievalist of his era, and gives a brief assessment of Lewis' incalculable legacy on the shape modern Christianity took under his scholarship. It's a good introduction to this masterful writer and storyteller.
C.S. Lewis Literature Overview
For centuries, Christians have been tormented by one question above all: If God is good and all-powerful, why does he allow his creatures to suffer pain? C.S. Lewis sets out to disentangle this knotty issue but wisely adds that in the end no intellectual solution can dispense with the necessity for patience and courage.
