In this UCTV talk, neuropsychiatrist Dilip V. Jeste summarizes the alarming rise of loneliness in the United States and in many countries throughout the world. The health effects of loneliness play an enormous role in the current decline of average life expectancy in the United States, particularly in the rise of suicide and opioid overdoses. But in addition to these outcomes, loneliness also increases the risk for physical ailments like heart attack, stroke, and more. It does so much so that the loneliness epidemic is considered as bad as smoking by some research. After delivering the gloomy data on loneliness in the first half of the talk, Jeste discusses some ways to counteract the negative effects of loneliness, even if one is alone. He describes wisdom as a key factor and defines it as including compassion, self-regulation, and other characteristics. It's an interesting hypothesis for countering this silent epidemic that is plaguing much of the world.
