In this interview from Fresh Air, author Michael Pollan relates stories from his bestselling book How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence. In the first half of the interview, Pollan discusses the new research being conducted with psychedelic drugs involving people with terminal illnesses or mental illnesses and the promising early results that are occurring. In the second half of the interview, Pollan tries to explain his own psychedelic trips that he took for the book and the impact they had on his life. While he admits that his trips on psychedelic mushrooms are ineffable, he attempts to describe the images, emotions, and realizations that he had on his trips and how they led him to feel a greater sense of openness towards life and death.
