In this lecture from UCTV, Dr. Mary Whooley focuses on the connection between mental health and heart disease. She starts the lecture by citing studies that connect hostility, anxiety, and depression to an increase in developing heart disease similar to that of smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. For most of the talk, Dr. Whooley focuses on depression and heart disease. She points out that behaviors associated with depression, such as lack of physical activity and not taking medications, can explain some of the increase in the prevalence of heart disease. But don't stress out if you've had depression, as the last part of the talk focuses on effective ways for treating depression and, in turn, improving cardiovascular health. Dr. Whooley advocates for the effectiveness of psychotherapy, medication, and some alternative treatments like exercise and light therapy. It's an interesting talk that uses scientific studies to show the connections between a healthy mind and a healthy heart.
