Author Robert Greene shares many insights from his best-selling book The Laws of Human Nature in this popular talk from Google. Some of his ideas on human nature one might find uncomfortable such as humans are largely driven by unconscious forces, they're primarily irrational and emotional, they're generally narcissistic, and they mostly conform to various tribes and cultures throughout life. Greene encourages listeners not to exclude themselves from these traits of human nature, but instead use them as points of self-inquiry in investigating the reasons for our emotions and behavior. By examining aspects of ourselves, such as our childhoods and the idea of our Jungian shadow, we can bring the reasons for our actions more into consciousness and also develop empathy for those around us. Greene tells some interesting stories about Isaac Newton, Ernest Shackleton, and Abraham Lincoln within the talk, and at the end of the talk he answers some good questions from Google employees.
