Listen to or watch this brand new talk from University of California Television (UCTV) on the benefits and risks of alcohol use in adults. Dr. Alison Moore heads up the geriatrics division at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. In this talk she gives a balanced look at the ways in which drinking alcohol can be good and bad for you. After eight minutes of introductions (which you can skip), she starts the talk with defining what an alcoholic drink is and then differentiates between low-risk drinking and high-risk drinking. For low-risk drinkers the benefits of alcohol consumption include prevention of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and a number of other benefits over non-drinkers. While the data is there, the reasons for these benefits are disputed. But the list of the risks of alcohol is quite long, especially for high-risk, heavy drinkers, with alcohol leading to higher levels of numerous cancers, cardiovascular disease, and psychiatric disorders like depression. At the end she focuses on older adults who drink and some of the studies she has been involved in. You can download this talk on MP3 from the UCTV website or watch it on YouTube.
