The Source Family (2012) Documentary on Free Online Video

Using film footage and music provided by former Source family members, this documentary follows the story of Father Yoz (formerly Jim Baker), who formed a cult of devoted young followers around one of the first organic health-food restaurants in the U.S. In many ways, the Source Family represented the more benign side of a generation of disillusioned, spiritually curious young men and women that were seeking alternative ways to live in the late 60s and early 70s. Father Yoz himself was formerly a successful business man, and was rechristened with a new spiritual identity that fulfilled the patriarchal needs of his followers, yet never quite allowed him to silence his old demons. The Source Family is essential for anyone interested in the psychology that fueled the strange, sometimes frightening personality-driven cults that were so prevalent at the height of the American counterculture movement.
