Comparative religion writer Huston Smith unveils the mystical side of Islam, in this brief survey of Sufism. Using footage culled from across the Middle East, Smith introduces viewers to how Sufism evolved partly as a critical reaction to the worldliness that came about during the rise of Islam. Sufist sheikh's and their pupils seek to infuse Islamic tradition with a spirit of liberty and love, praying constantly until their lives are nothing but prayer in motion. Perhaps the Sufist ideal is best exemplified by the whirling dervish dances that begin the documentary. These dances are a circular movement that gets the practitioner nowhere, yet acknowledges that life may not be about getting anywhere at all. This 30-minute documentary is available through YouTube.
