LearnOutLoud.com Review
Religious scholar Huston Smith was the author of the popular comparative religions book
The World's Religions
. He joined Terry Gross on Fresh Air in 1996 to discuss various religions and the impact that they had on his life. They start the conversation with some big questions pertaining to the major world religions. Gross then asks Smith about his life growing up in the Methodist tradition as a child of missionaries in China, and he describes his lifelong journey with Christianity. Smith also tells the story of a profound religious experience he had in the Zen Buddhist tradition at a retreat. While a scholar on many religions, Smith doesn't necessarily advocate a cafeteria approach to religion (picking and choosing different elements of each). Rather he encourages listeners to select a specific religious tradition and see where that takes you.
