David Brooks on Genius, God and Morality

In this presentation hosted by the 92nd Street Y, New York Times columnist and author David Brooks traces how previous generations instilled character, and how our current culture might learn from their example. Using historical luminaries such as Frances Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower, Dorothy Day and others as biographical examples, Brooks shows how these figures embodied the вЂњeulogy virtuesвЂќ of humility and service that have become less valued in a modern culture that prizes more practical, accomplishment-driven вЂњresume virtuesвЂќ. Concerned that many young people today will be driven to worldly success at the cost of inner depth, Brooks wrote his newest book, The Road to Character as a personal exploration of what it means to cultivate a certain self-control, empathy, and personal conviction that is in danger of being swept aside by a meritocratic 21st century culture.
