Description

Lynne V. Cheney was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve her second year term as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the independent federal agency that supports education, research, preservation and public programs in the humanities.

Since her first term as NEH Chairman began in 1986, Mrs. Cheney has written five major reports, including "National Tests: What Other Countries Expect Their Students to Know"; "Tyrannical Machines"; "50 Hours: A Core Curriculum for College Students"; "Humanities in America"; and "American Memory."

Under Cheney’s leadership, the NEH has launched programs aimed at improving education in America’s schools, colleges and universities.

Mrs. Cheney has written and spoken often about American education and the value of the humanities to one’s professional and personal life. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor, and she has been a featured guest on "The Today Show," "Firing Line," and "This Week With David Brinkley."

Before coming to NEH, Mrs. Chaney taught at several colleges and universities and was a magazine editor and widely published author. She has written two novels and co-authored a third. With her husband, Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, she wrote a history of the House of Representatives.
