David Graeber wrote an article and then a book on Bullshit Jobs, which struck a chord with readers around the world. In the book and in this talk from RSA, he outlines the many millions of meaningless jobs generated by contemporary capitalism. As he researched the book, the people came forward including managers, administrators, corporate lawyers, telemarketers, consultants, and many other people in professions who found their work meaningless and unfulfilling.
Graeber found it odd that most cultures don't perceive this as much of a problem, especially when it can lead to depression, stress, anxiety, and many other forms of human misery. As an anarchist activist, Graeber argues for universal basic income (UBI) as a way of getting rid of the need for these bullshit jobs. Sadly, Graeber passed away in 2020, but his ideas on bullshit jobs remain.
