Description
Nicholas Negroponte talked about his organization, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), and its efforts to provide one Internet-connected laptop to every school-age child in developing countries. The laptops are specially designed durable, hand-cranked machines running programs based on educational theory. He founded the project based on education being at least the start of the solution to most of the world's problems. He promoted its Give One Get One program, originally running from November 12-26, 2007, in the U.S. and Canada, which allows individuals to buy one of OLPC's XO laptops for a child in a developing nation while also receiving one for a child in their life. Background video was shown of children in Brazil using the laptops. Nicholas Negroponte is founder and chairman of the One Laptop per Child non-profit organization. He is currently on leave from MIT, where he was co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory, and the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Technology. On November 22 the Give One Get One program was extended until December 31, 2007.
