LearnOutLoud.com Review
In this conversation presented by the 92nd Street Y, psychiatrist Gail Saltz talks with historian Catherine Clinton to dive deep into the psychologically complex relationship between Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Starting with their early courting, moving into the couple’s early marriage years, the loss of two children, and the tragic death of President Lincoln in the closing days of an already tumultuous Civil War, Saltz tracks this era through the eyes of Mary Todd, a woman that has been given short-shrift by the majority of historians. Criticized for her liberal spending during the war, and isolated by her own son after Lincoln’s death due to emotional instability, Clinton offers a corrective on the commonly-held view of Mary Todd as an overwrought hysteric. Instead, we get a much more complex view of Todd as driver of Lincoln’s ambitions, we see the key role she played as sounding-board for his decision-making, and explore her later role as first advocate of his enduring legacy.
