LearnOutLoud.com Review
This audio book from the Naxos Opera Explained series is an excellent primer on Rossini's most famous opera, The Barber of Seville. These opera introductions were written by
Thomson Smillie
and are very well narrated by David Timson. The beginning of the audio book provides the context for when the opera was written, including a brief bio of Gioachino Rossini and the world of Italian opera he was surrounded by as he prolifically composed operas in the early 19th century. You'll learn fun facts about The Barber of Seville, like that Rossini wrote the opera in just two weeks when he was 24 years old. After the introduction, our narrator, David Timson, leads us through the plot of The Barber of Seville, which is beautifully interspersed with Naxos classical recordings of some of the greatest music from the opera, including the famous overture, the Barber's entrance aria "Largo al factotum," and Rosina's cavatina "Una voce poco fa." If you enjoy this introduction, then there are many more audio books like it from the Naxos Opera Explained series, which we wrote about in our blog post
