LearnOutLoud.com Review
Watch this moving documentary on the power of music and memory. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett follows around Dan Cohen of the Music & Memory nonprofit organization as he goes into nursing homes and plays music for elderly people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The results are quite remarkable as the minds and memories of many people featured come alive when their favorite music is played. Neurologist Oliver Sacks is interviewed for the documentary and comments on how music can tap into the memories of those with dementia in ways few other things can. In the film, Dan Cohen is on a quest to get music into the thousands of nursing homes across the United States. The film in general is critical of nursing homes as a way of treating the elderly, and sees music therapy as one way to improve the lives of so many aging people who are often isolated in these homes.
