Description
Times Square is a special spot in midtown Manhattan. It teems with people - commuters, shoppers, theatergoers, merchants, prostitutes, policemen, hardened New Yorkers and wide-eyed tourists. And then there are the lights. The flashing signs. The huge billboards. The garrish neon. In 1992, a photographer named Richard Sandler began a project taking pictures of these radiant images, signs and lights. Soon his focus began to shift from such sights to the sounds of the multitudes of religious believers who are also drawn to Times Square. He switched from a still camera to a video camera and a microphone, and began to record the preachers and missionaries who have made a portion of Times Square their dominion. On his journey among the gods of Times Square, Sandler is guided by the question, "Why is it that Times Square is a mecca for modern-day religious pilgrims who come to this place to inquire into the nature of god, to argue, to pray, to convert?"
