LearnOutLoud.com Review
Neil Postman was the author of many books, notably cultural criticism books like
Amusing Ourselves to Death
. In this talk from C-SPAN which aired in 1992, Postman discusses his book
Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology
. In the book and the interview, he argues that new technologies are not merely additive to a culture, but can change the entire culture. In
Amusing Ourselves to Death
he persuasively argued that the introduction of television into American life changed the entire public discourse, from the way politics is conducted to how news is distributed to the public. In
Technopoly
he expands on this argument, pointing out how many cultural institutions in American life have been surrendered over to new technologies and their progress, much to the detriment of culture. And the introduction of these new technologies is occurring at such a rapid rate that cultural institutions are struggling with how to deal with such fast technological change. He makes many prescient statements including one regarding the enthusiastic urge to combine the television, the phone, and more into one device so that one can conduct all public life from the privacy of one's home without seeing others face to face, as if that were going to be a good thing. Today Postman rolls in his grave as American culture is obliterated at the altar of technological progress.
