Dr. Norman Rosenthal on The Gift of Adversity Video Talk

As the psychologist that pioneered the study of seasonal affective disorder, Norman Rosenthal has devoted his career to helping his patients cope with depression. For his newest studies, Rosenthal has drawn from his own life, and those of others to demonstrate how adversity (both emotional and physical) can actually be one of life's greatest teachers. As Rosenthal puts it, the more we learn to roll with the rocky seas life can sometimes throw at us, the more we develop a capacity to learn from what goes wrong and develop the presence of mind necessary to analyze a situation. He dismisses sheer willpower as unsustainable over time, arguing instead that healthy habits such as yoga and meditation can be life-saving if cultivated patiently and deliberately.
