Learn about the curious science of pain in this informative 2-hour lecture from Anatomy Professor Allan I. Basbaum who teaches at the University of California, San Francisco. He was the editor-in-chief of the medical journal Pain and is certainly an expert on the topic. The first half of the lecture details the latest science of pain, and the important relationship between pain, the brain, and the emotions. The second half of the lecture deals with the many ways one can treat pain and how these methods work scientifically. Professor Basbaum talks about opioids, cannabis, acupuncture, and other methods for treating pain. While certain medications are effective at treating pain they can come with horrible side effects for instance the addiction, constipation, and potential death prevalent with opioid use. Dr. Basbaum provides many helpful visual aids with his lecture and its a good introduction to learning about how pain works in the body and the brain.
