LearnOutLoud.com Review
Back in 1970, Alan Watts sat down with Studs Terkel to discuss his autobiography
In My Own Way
. The conversation starts with Watts' life growing up in England and his fascination with Eastern religion and culture. The interview quickly turns into a wide-ranging back and forth on Watts' philosophy of life. Central to Watts' belief is that unlike Western religions where humans came into this world, Watts believes in the Eastern idea that we came out of this world and are one with nature. Watts doesn't attach himself to any religion or ideology, and believes that most of the problems in the world stem from people taking their beliefs too seriously. He throws out some controversial thoughts of his feeling on Mahatma Gandhi, unto which Studs pushes back and keeps questioning him on it. Watts does read some passages from his autobiography and it's mostly a joyous conversation between Terkel and Watts.
