Description

At a time of pressing debate about guns in America, the Second Amendment's right to bear arms ranks as one of the most discussed provisions of the Bill of Rights. Author Michael Waldman tackled this constitutional issue and chronicles the history of the Second Amendment in his new book, "The Second Amendment: A Biography." Waldman examined history and the roots of the amendment. His book takes a look at the evolution of the debate over time, the issue of violence, the debate over gun control and the rising influence of such groups as the National Rifle Association and others advocating for an individual right to gun ownership.

Michael Waldman has served as president of the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, a nonpartisan law and policy institute that emphasizes the improvement of the fundamental systems of justice and democracy, since 2005. He previously served as the director of speechwriting for President Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1999, drafting or editing important speeches, including four State of the Union speeches and two inaugural addresses. Throughout his extensive career in law, policy and government service, Waldman has written several books, including "Who Robbed America? A Citizens' Guide to the S&L Scandal," "POTUS Speaks," "A Return to Common Sense" and "My Fellow Americans: The Most Important Speeches of America's Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama."
