Since going mainstream in the 90s, genetic modification in the agriculture industry has become a major tool used to produce higher crop yields, but many have come to conclude that the benefits are oversold. In this debate hosted by Intelligence Squared, Monsanto's Robert Fraley argues that after 20 years of active use, GM technology has helped farmers safely produce more food to meet the demand of a population that will double by 2050, while at the same time minimizing negative environmental impact. To counter this view, Chuck Benbrook and Marty Mellon feel the current state of biotechnology has not lived up to early promise, citing an increased use of herbicides, and no clear consensus on how safe these foods are for humans to consumption.
