Host Harry Kreisler interviews Lawrence Wright, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 in this Conversations With History program. After talking about his history as a writer, Wright discusses the roots of the philosophy of Al-Qaeda's radical ideology going back to the writings of Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian religious scholar. His ideas spread to Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, who in the wake of defeating the Soviet Union in Afghanistan felt that the Islamic world could unite and once again become a world power. Wright explains that after the U.S. abandonment of Afghanistan, the first war in Iraq, and the establishment of permanent U.S. troops in Turkey, bin Laden became convinced that Al-Qaeda's jihad must be against the United States.
