Writer David Foster Wallace was on Fresh Air in 1997 to talk about his collection of essays
A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. In this interview, he hilariously describes his experiences on a cruise ship where pleasure is forced upon the passengers, and anxiety develops over whether or not you're experiencing enough pleasure from your expensive vacation. Wallace shares his discontent over the pursuit of pleasure in late 20th-century American life. He also expresses his idea on the limits of irony in a world where ironic rebellion is used to sell everything. Terry Gross also questions him about his thousand-page novel Infinite Jest and the themes in the novel. This 20-minute interview is full of Wallace's unique observations.
