Description

When Prince Edward, heir to the throne, meets Tom Canty, a pauper boy, he is astonished that he and Tom look like identical twins. The prince persuades the pauper to change clothes with him, and suddenly everyone treats Tom like a prince - while Edward is chased unceremoniously away from the palace. Forced to live by his wits for the first time, the prince wanders through London in Tom's rags, observing firsthand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. When his father King Henry VIII dies, Edward makes his way back to Westminster Abbey in time to assume his rightful place. Edward assumes the throne with the benefit of knowing life as a pauper.
