Description
This unflinching picture of turn-of-the-century New York City's Bowery slums has been cited as the first example of Naturalism in the American novel. It tells the story of Maggie, a girl whose life of poverty inevitably leads to her downfall. Crane used stark descriptions as well as phonetic spellings for dialogue to give a realistic picture of the Irish immigrants of New York City and utilized irony to show that the hypocrisy of moral tenets have no bearing on the reality of life in poverty. This book was published in 1893, when Crane was 22 years old, under a pseudonym due to its controversial subject matter.
