LearnOutLoud.com Review
J. Robert Oppenheimer delivered this 20-minute speech to the American Philosophical Society at the University of Pennsylvania in November of 1945. Given just months after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer realized the significance of the atomic bomb for both science and humankind. He argues that scientists need to speak up about the terrors of nuclear weapons despite any implications for science it might have. At the same time, he acknowledges the potential for nuclear power development, though he understands that atomic power brings the ability for nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer urges cooperation among nations to make progress toward averting global devastation.
