John Hope Franklin was interviewed about his life, his career, and his body of work. He also responded to viewer telephone calls. Professor Franklin has served as president of the American Historical Association, the Society for Historical Archaeology and Phi Beta Kappa, and has taught at Duke University, Howard University, the University of Chicago and other institutions. Video clips were shown of Mr. Franklin at his home in Durham, North Carolina. In one clip he discussed his working habits where he was at work in his dining room. In another clip he gave a tour of his orchid greenhouse. He is the author of many books, including The Emancipation Proclamation, The Militant South, The Free Negro in North Carolina, Reconstruction After the Civil War, A Southern Odyssey: Travelers in the Ante-bellum North, Race and History: Selected Essays, 1938-1988, and The Color Line: Legacy for the Twenty-first Century. Professor Franklin's most popular book, From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans, written in 1947, is currently in its seventh printing (over 3 million copies of the book have been sold).
