LearnOutLoud.com Review
Was Andrew Jackson a great leader, or someone that represented one of the most lamentable moments in American history? In this documentary hosted by PBS, various historians grapple with the mixed legacy of America's 7th president. Martin Sheen narrates a historical overview of Jackson's life, starting with his early years as an orphan during the revolution, and tracing how this driven frontiersman rose to national celebrity as a war hero, became the leader of the country, and ultimately enlarged the concept of both the Presidency and the Union itself. At the same time, Jackson's violent tendencies, his unquestioning, even aggressive views of black slavery, and his harsh advocacy of Indian removal have all worked against his legacy in many ways, leading one historian to call him an "atrocious saint".
