Tracy Kidder talked about his book Strength in What Remains: A Journey of Remembrance and Forgiveness (Random House; August 25, 2009). It is the story of Deogratis (Deo), a medical student from Burundi who came to the United States after narrowly escaping civil war and genocide in his home country. With little money and few English skills, he worked delivering groceries, sleeping in Central Park. Eventually, he met people who helped in his quest to become a doctor. Then he returned to Burundi and built a clinic and health care system through his organization Village Health Works. Tracy Kidder also talked about many of his other books including Mountains Beyond Mountains the story of Dr. Paul Farmer (who was a mentor to Deo) and his medical work with infectious diseases in Haiti. Mr. Kidder won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1982 for his book The Soul of a New Machine" Other books include Home Town; Old Friends; House; Among Schoolchildren; and My Detachment.
