LearnOutLoud.com Review
While Martin Luther King, Jr. never lived to write his own autobiography, King scholar Clayborne Carson compiled this narrative out of King's many writings and it is a very well crafted autobiography narrated in first person. After listening to King's sermons in
A Knock at Midnight
and King's speeches in
A Call to Conscience
, this autobiography perfectly connected the dots in relation to those recordings. And also interspersed throughout this autobiography are the actual recordings of King. This audio book really displays how well rounded and thoughtful Martin Luther King was, as he expresses his beliefs regarding economics, philosophy, religion, politics, race relations, labor issues, nonviolent protest, the Vietnam War, Gandhi, Malcolm X, and all his other convictions which he played such an active role in fighting for. Levar Burton's narration is a little to congenial for the voice of Martin Luther King and the ending of this autobiography is a haphazard montage of various King speeches, without mentioning his assassination or his legacy. Nevertheless King's life and message come through very strong in this excellent autobiography.
