This 1974 documentary is directed by Herbert Kline and narrated by Orson Welles. The subject spans 100 years of modern art history and is divided into two parts. The first part covers well known modern artists from Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin to Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, along with many other modern artists you may or may not be familiar with. The film lightly touches on many artistic movements of the time including Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and much more. The second half of the documentary largely focuses on sculpture in modern art, along with modern art trends after World War II. It touches upon Pop Art covering artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Many famous modern artists are featured throughout the documentary either in interviews or archival footage. As always Orson Welles does a masterful job narrating the piece and he helps to bring into clearer focus the most revolutionary period of art history since the Renaissance.
