Description
Set in nineteenth-century England, the charm of this great novel of domestic realism lies chiefly in the magic by which the commonplace lives of the principal characters are transformed into lively pictures full of vital appeal. Maggie Tulliver, whose father owns a mill perched on the banks of the River Floss, is intelligent and richly imaginative beyond the understanding of her relatives and in particular of her brother Tom, a boy of limited intelligence. Despite their opposite temperaments, Maggie and Tom are united by a strong bond. When Maggie is pursued by Philip Wakem, the deformed son of the lawyer responsible for the ruin of her father, Tom forbids Maggie’s friendship with Philip, to which Maggie reluctantly complies. Later, she falls in love with Stephen Guest, the handsome and passionate fiancé of her cousin Lucy Deane. They go off together on impulse, and although Maggie repents before it is too late, her return is misconstrued and her life is made desperately unhappy.
