Description

Kate Croy, the daughter of a discredited social adventurer, is secretly engaged to Merton Denscher, a journalist. While Merton is in America, Kate becomes friends with the wealthy Milly Theale, who confides to her that she is suffering from a mysterious illness and that her doctor has told her that only happiness can postpone her death. When Merton returns to London, Kate encourages him to take an interest in Milly, hoping that they will get married, thus soon making him a rich widower whom she herself can marry. The plot appears to be working until the fortune-hunting Lord Mark, rejected by Milly, reveals to her the true relationship between Kate and Merton. What befalls this tangle of friends and lovers illustrates exquisitely what happens when a woman’s desire for both her lover and riches makes the object of her affection question his own true worth in her eyes.
