Horace Porter served as a lieutenant colonel and was attached to Ulysses S. Grant’s staff from April 1864 until the end of the Civil War. Besides his own observations of military life, Porter kept extensive notes of Grant’s conversations. His writing captured Grant as a soldier and lets us hear in the General’s words the tactical evaluations comprising many of the war’s key decisions, bringing to life both our country’s most memorable conflict and the Union’s most illustrious leader.
