New York Times columnist David Brooks speaks at the 2011 TED conference about some of the ideas in his latest book The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement. From his work in covering politics he has observed amazing social and emotional skills in politicians as they interact amongst themselves and with their constituents but he has seen a disconnect when it comes to politicians reasoning out their policies. In this talk he emphasizes the importance of training the emotions and the unconscious in addition to the reasonable, logical brain that we develop in education.
