Description
Proper government, Will says, involves the cultivation of good character in citizens, or, as he calls it, “statecraft as soulcraft.” But from our roots, such a soulcraft hasn’t come to pass. The founding fathers’ faith that moral balance and national cohesiveness would be supplied by the government’s doing little more than encouraging the free operation of “opposite and rival interests” hasn’t come to pass. Instead, our nation has become given to habitual self-indulgence in the unchecked pursuit of material acquisitions and private passions, weakened as a civilization to the point that our endurance is questionable. Much of the fault may be traced to our inadequate understanding of the shaping and guiding role that government can and should play in determining the moral character of its citizens.
